Our Recreation Department, in collaboration with Special Olympics, hosts several Unified Sports teams including;
- Softball
- Volleyball
- Basketball
- Soccer
Following is a description of the philosophy of the Unified Sports teams, as outlined in the Official Special Olympics Summer Sports Rules guide.
"Special Olympics Unified Sports® are Special Olympics training and competition programs developed by Special Olympics International and
Accredited Programs in which approximately equal numbers of Special Olympics athletes and peer athletes without mental
retardation (Partners) participate together on sports teams for training and competition.
All participants (Special Olympics Athletes and Partners)
on a team shall be of similar age and ability. All athletes in this
program need to have the necessary skill level to participate in the
sport. Special Olympics Unified Sports® is an important program
because it expands sports opportunities for Athletes and Partners
seeking new challenges.
In addition, Special Olympics Unified Sports® dramatically
increases inclusion in the community by helping to break down
barriers that have historically kept people with and without mental
retardation apart.
At the same time, Special Olympics Unified Sports® furthers the
overall mission of Special Olympics by providing a valuable sports
opportunity to individuals who are not presently involved with
Special Olympics."
In addition to the Unified Sports Teams, we participate in the City of Warwick's
Recreation Division of Coed Softball.
